The Canadian comedy legends are celebrating their 40th anniversary this week with shows at Rivoli and The Danforth Music Hall.

KITH formed in 1984 in Calgary and Toronto. From left to right in the photo, members include Kevin McDonald, Scott Thompson, Bruce McCulloch, Dave Foley and Mark McKinney.

The old Scottish-Dalriadan name McDonald is derived from the Anglicized version of the Gaelic personal name Mac Dhomhnuill. McDonald is the 52nd most popular surname in Canada with around 40,000 users.

The Scottish surname McCulloch is commonly found in Galloway. It was first used by the Strathclyde people of the Scottish/English Borderlands. It is derived from the Gaelic personal name Cullach, meaning boar.

McKinney has its origins in Scotland and is derived from the combination of two Gaelic words: Mac, meaning son of, and Fhionghuin, which translates to the God of Fire.

The roots of the distinguished surname Thompson can also be found in Scotland. The name is derived from the popular given name Thomas, an Aramaic name meaning “twin,” and refers to “a son of Thomas or Thom. KITH member Scott Thompson even has his comedy series branded Scott-Land!
