Quinn Hughes displays tremendous POISE on this goal🚨

What do you notice about the way Quinn rushes the puck up ice through the neutral zone?

Did you notice

A) his ability to scan - from the second he gathers the puck in his D-zone, he doesn’t look down one single time. He has his eyes up, keeping the puck in his peripherals (peripheral vision) - it’s during these few seconds that he’s developing a plan in his head, based on his surroundings and how the play is developing around him

B) his poise - how calm, cool, & collected he is with the puck on his stick. It almost looks like he’s moving in slow motion, when in reality, this is in full speed

These two abilities alone can change your game overnight. You’ll stop panicking with the puck, throwing the puck away, or causing turnovers

But it takes an incredible level of stick-handling ability and puck control. You essentially want to be able to stickhandle with your eyes closed. Therefore, you’ll be able to skate with your head up and stick-handle with feel. One thing that’s very important is to keep the puck flat. It’s really hard to control a bouncing or rolling puck with your eyes up.

This is Heads Up Hockey. It goes beyond just physical ability, you need to have cognitive ability. And you need to learn how to get your eyes off of the biscuit and use them to scan the play around you.

This goes so overlooked.

Call it what you want: decision making, hockey IQ, confidence, heads up hockey, awareness etc.

This is a skill we need to train. And in my opinion, it’s the most important one - decision making

Take any athlete in any professional sport: they are in peak physical condition, of course. But so are many other adults in the world who play sports and are really fit. What professional athletes posses is poise and confidence. Big time players make big time plays in big time moments

Think Michael Jordan with the 89’ Bulls with 3 seconds on the clock to knock off Cleveland. Most guys can’t hit this during open gym at the local YMCA. Try in front of 50,000 fans with your season & career on the line
