deadinkbookshop is starting to look festive so now I'm thinking about Jólabókaflóðið 📚 have you heard about Jólabókaflóðið? If you haven't then happy birthday baby welcome to the rest of your life you're going to love this.

Also known and easier to type as Jolabokaflod, which is the given name to the great Icelandic literary tradition of book giving at Christmas, which came about during the second World War. Paper was one of the few resources that wasn't rationed so when it came to gift giving, particularly at Christmas time, books grew to be the most common gift exchanged.

Iceland has a very proud and deep instilled cultural love of literature. You're probably familiar with the Nordic genre of thrillers, but Iceland has a remarkably thriving publishing industry for such a small island, cultivated by traditions such as Jolabokaflod.

The word comes from "Yule Book Flood", so named for the "flood" of new books published at the start of Winter. Every Icelandic household receives a free catalogue of the year's new books which signifies the beginning of the festive season. Traditionally, gifts are exchanged on Christmas Eve, and there's a little time in the evening for everyone to have some time to themselves and crack open their new books.

Might have a little something planned to celebrate December in a Dead Ink way. We can do book floods. And not just when I meet my inevitable demise by book avalanche, which I'm anticipating any day now. Anyway - advent coming soon. Keep an eye out.
