Children are growingly recruited by criminal gangs across Sweden to commit murders and other crimes, exploiting kids’ young age to avoid prosecution.

Swedish police has concluded a year-long investigation into a case involving an 11-year-old child who expressed a desire to kill, saying he ‘cannot wait for his first dead body’ on Instagram. The child was then allegedly offered $13,680 by a 19-year-old contact to carry out a murder, with the promise of clothes and transportation to the crime scene in Varmland province, according to AFP.

This case is part of a larger trend in Sweden, where gang-related violence—including shootings and bombings linked to turf wars and the drug trade—continues to rise. Sweden's gang crime network is highly organized, with leaders operating from abroad and using encrypted messaging platforms such as Telegram, Snapchat, and Signal to recruit children under 15, the age of criminal responsibility.

‘It's organized like a job market, with missions posted on discussion forums, and an increasing number of young people accepting these assignments,’ said Johan Olsson, head of the Swedish police’s National Operations Department (NOA), during a press briefing last month.

The number of murder-related cases in Sweden involving suspects under 15 has sharply increased, rising from 31 in the first eight months of 2023 to 102 during the same period this year, according to the Swedish Prosecution Authority.
