Singer @devongilfillian wrote his song “Love You Anyway” about his Nana, who voted differently than he did in 2020. Wrestling with his feelings and emotions about how he wanted to spend his time with his friends and family, he poured his heart into the album that shares the name of the title song from his album “Love You Anyway.” Beyond that, it’s a song about personal relationships and how we must focus on the humanity of those we love. 

I’ll be the first to admit I’ve given up on family members and friends who like the other guy. Yelled, screamed, talked shit, blasted them with “intelligent,” “logical,” rhetoric. It didn’t help anything. I don’t know that we’ll ever see eye to eye. But I was reminded this morning that we need to choose with whom we are willing to invest our time and energy and start our conversations there… and start them with love. For the last 8 years, I haven’t been open to that, but I’m willing to try. But I also need to be open to deciding whether I am in or out for change. I can’t be halfway. 

But being “in” means giving up some comforts, making sacrifices, and genuinely engaging. It means learning, listening, and understanding the unhoused. It means paying attention to what’s happening in our city halls and police departments. It means educating ourselves about Palestine and Israel… not just what the @nytimes wants us to know. And it means listening to the fears of our small business owners, parents, and farmers to understand what common ground we can find on immigration, living wages, safe communities - but safe communities for EVERYONE - safe communities on Indigenous lands, safe communities in white Midwest suburbs, safe communities in southern towns, and safe communities in big cities with diverse, mixed populations of Black, Hispanic, Jewish, Muslim, Asian human beings, who’ve historically and systematically been denied opportunities for prosperity forever… none of which are monoliths and deserve care and attention for their own differences. We need safe lands where our parks and environment can adjust to the demands of human life and still have space for us to play, camp, hike, fish, hunt, and live.
