“There are going to be aftershocks; you don’t have a magnitude-7.0 without them,” seismologist Lucy Jones said.

Preliminary data suggests the fault that triggered the powerful earthquake ruptured from west to east, according to Jones. This style and location of faulting, Jones explained, means there is a chance an aftershock could occur on the San Andreas Fault. However, seismologists can’t predict with certainty the location or strength of aftershocks.
