Today, Richy Ledezma scored his first goal in two and a half years for PSV, and celebrated passionately. 👏🏾

“It was a very emotional moment for me,” he said via PSV after the game.

“I spoke with my grandpa, who has cancer. This goal was for him, he makes me strong.”

It’s been a very long journey for Ledezma to get back to playing regularly for PSV.

He made his PSV debut in November 2020, the same month he made his USMNT debut.

While other USMNT debutants in that window, such as Gio Reyna and Yunus Musah, went on to play in the World Cup, Ledezma’s growth was significantly hindered by injuries.

In December 2020, he suffered an ACL injury. He returned and suffered an ankle injury in January 2022.

Then, he suffered another injury in January 2023.

Ledezma later came back on loan to the U.S. with NYCFC, where he played 27 games.

It seemed like he had no future at PSV. But this summer, due to Sergiño Dest’s injury, Ledezma was given a chance to play at the right-back spot.

Usually a winger or an attacking midfielder, Ledezma has done well as right-back and has played in 14 games this season.

He finally got his goal today, which is his second ever goal for PSV.

The 24-year-old dedicated this goal to his grandfather, who gives him strength.

Let’s hope Ledezma’s achievements also give strength to his grandfather in the battle with cancer.

Around four years ago this time, Ledezma debuted for the USMNT and had two assists in the first game.

He said recently that his goal is to return to the USMNT. 🇺🇸
