Peak migration is over. Can I stop worrying about bird collisions?

It’s a common belief that with migration winding down, bird-glass collisions also stop.

In fact, collisions continue to happen. Even as the colder months settle in, the dangers posed by reflective and fly-through glass continue to threaten resident birds. To protect them, you must make your glass Feather Friendly as soon as possible.

Here’s why collisions continue happening in winter, even if not as frequently as during migration:

Winter Vegetation and Food Sources: Fruit-bearing trees near buildings draw birds like Cedar Waxwings, increasing chances of collisions with glass (Brown et al., 2019, PeerJ).

Urban Lighting and Artificial Cues: Urban areas remain well-lit through winter, and artificial lights lure birds toward reflective glass that appears like a clear path. (Żmihorski et al., 2022, Science of the Total Environment).

Clear, Frequently Cleaned Glass: Buildings with recently cleaned or untreated glass further amplify the illusion of open space. Without bird-friendly treatment, windows remain hazardous even in winter (De Groot et al., 2022, PeerJ).

So, while migration may have slowed, winter is far from a safe season for birds. Consistent, year-round bird-safe strategies can make our spaces safer and significantly reduce these avoidable fatalities.

Apply Feather Friendly visual markers or birddivert UV markers as soon as possible to keep birds safe all year, from migration to the heart of winter!
