KNIGHTS 45, DUCKS 37: The varsity boys basketball team traveled to Taylor High School Friday evening and defeated the Ducks. Senior George McCoy was the game’s top scorer with 17 points; senior Jaiden Booe and junior Ethan Plummer contributed five points each. 

The Knights started slow, allowing Taylor to score the game’s first four points in the opening minutes of the game. Consecutive McCallum turnovers gave the Ducks the momentum to take the lead in the first quarter, 12-7. In the second quarter, the Knights warmed up offensively; however, the Taylor defense kept the Knights at bay while its offense expanded the Ducks’ lead. 

McCallum went to the locker room at halftime trailing 21-17. McCoy said that the Knights’ offensive deficit was in part due to a long bus ride and also a lack of energy. 

“We knew we were better than [Taylor],” he said. “We just had to come out and improve our intensity and play like we knew we could.”

The Ducks scored the first six points of the third quarter to take a 10-point lead, 27-17, but McCallum quickly rebounded with a scoring flurry and frenetic defense. A layup by McCoy to close the third quarter ended an 18-6 run that gave the Knights their first lead of the game, 35-33.

By the fourth quarter, McCallum had shaken off whatever plagued their offense in the first half. Scoring 10 points and holding Taylor to just one, the Knights closed out their ninth win on the season. 

Next week, the Knights play at Liberty Hill on Tuesday at 7 p.m. before traveling to Marble Falls on Thursday to compete in the three-day HTeaO Hoops Classic.
