#reposted essence Nikki Giovanni, acclaimed poet and activist, has passed away at the age of 81.

In an era when Black women were often silenced you wrote in boldface font, claiming space for all of us. Her work gave voice to our joys, our struggles, and our complexities, turning our pain into poetry and our joys into sonnets of triumphs.

Through her words, she showed us that to be Black and free is a radical act, one that requires no apology. She reminded us that our existence is enough and our power is infinite. With each poem, she gave us permission to be loud, proud, and boastful. 

Nikki Giovanni’s legacy is a living testament to the strength of Black women and a call for us to live unapologetically and fearlessly, just as we are.

May her words forever be echoed in our hearts.
