Farewell to Valentín. Played cupid last year and put New York City back on the altar with all the greatness it deserved. One MLS Cup for a city of eight million strong, a lone star above the badge that shines light on a story that is just as equally impressive as the silverware it provided. Beat Atlanta at home and then embarked on a 20-day journey that even Odysseus would’ve been proud of. New England away, Philadelphia away, Portland away. Dethroned an MVP-led squad that almost every pundit at the time would have had on their final four bracket, and did so in 35-degree New England weather. A red card in the final minutes sidelined Castellanos from playing Philadelphia in the Eastern Conference Final, but the City Boys prevailed. Finished off the job returning to the starting XI against Portland on December 11th, and we all know the rest. In a stadium that has seen so many legendary teams come and go, the size of the banner they got doesn’t do justice to what was accomplished that day at Providence Park. Modern soccer is still young, and for a professional league that hasn’t even turned thirty yet, it may be a long time until we realize the full extent of what Taty & NYCFC accomplished in 2021. It is without a doubt, though, that Castellanos will go down as one of the most influential players, if not the most influential player in NYCFC history. It’s rare to find a player that molds into a club so well, and although this chapter may have come to an end, we’re truly just witnessing the beginning of this 23-year old’s promising career. Girona got a good one.
