#repost vondapaige This loss is tough. I was introduced to the poetry of Nikki Giovanni by an art teacher in high school who became the sponsor of the Black Cultural Society I co-founded. 

🖤💜I read the poem Ego Tripping (which she wrote in 1972) and performed it often. Every time I did I straightened my spine, celebrated my ‘fro and reveled in the joy and pride of being a Black woman. 

🖤💜Decades later when I met her in Springfield, Mo while covering her book tour as a reporter I was fangirling so much I could hardly speak. She was magnificent.

🖤💜I’ve been re-reading Ego Tripping these last few days. And to all of my sisters who have been feeling the weight and disappointment of recent events and hurt by the notion that our hard work for justice, equity and democracy seems to have been in vain - Read it. Share it. 

🖤💜My Delta Sigma Theta soror and distinguished professor at my alma mater, Virginia Tech sent this forth this message from 1972 for us today. 

🖤💜In her brilliance as a writer, activist, educator and one of the foremost authors of the Black Arts Movement and the Black Power Movement - she knew what was magical about us back then! 

Rest in Power Nikki Giovanni. Thank you. And I agree: “I am so perfect so divine so ethereal so surreal. I cannot be comprehended except by my permission.” 🖤💜
