Portland Head Light, located in Cape Elizabeth, Maine, is one of the most iconic lighthouses in the United States. 

The lighthouse was commissioned by George Washington in 1787, making it one of the first lighthouses built in the United States. The construction was completed in 1791, and the lighthouse was lit for the first time on January 10, 1791. The original structure was a simple stone tower.

The current brick tower, standing at 80 feet tall, was built in 1791 and designed by architect and engineer Joseph D. Smith. The lighthouse features a distinct white tower with a black lantern and is topped with a red roof.

Over the years, the lighthouse underwent several renovations and updates. In 1855, a new lens was installed, increasing the light’s visibility. The keeper’s house was also added, providing accommodations for the lighthouse keepers.

In 1989, the lighthouse was automated, which meant that it no longer required a keeper to operate it. This change reflected advancements in technology and reduced the need for human presence.

Today, Portland Head Light is part of Fort Williams Park and is a popular tourist destination. It is maintained by the American Lighthouse Foundation and is recognized for its historical significance and picturesque setting.

Portland Head Light continues to be an important navigational aid for ships entering Portland Harbor and remains a beloved symbol of Maine’s maritime heritage.
