“Each year, the Holiday Bus serves as a symbol of our appreciation for the community’s support,” AC Transit spokesperson Robert Lyles said in an email. “It also underscores our commitment to giving back to the riders, at least 50 percent of whom have no access to a car and rely solely on our transit services for access to jobs, education and medical care.”

This 61-year-old tradition dates back to 1963, three years after AC Transit began service. It originally began as a one-time “thank-you” to riders, but evolved into an annual tradition, featuring more and more elaborate, bolted-on decorations — including custom-painted vehicles and handmade wooden ornaments.
