Whether due to lingering effects of the pandemic or fears of a looming recession, it hasn’t been a hallmark year for new Portland restaurants. But this list of the best dishes I (our food writer Michael Russell) tried in Portland in 2024, focused primarily (but not entirely) on places that opened in the past year, does prove there was plenty of good food to be found, even if much of it came from pop-ups, residencies and monthly events, instead of full-blown restaurants.

So we have here contenders for Portland’s very best burger and pizza, yet each is only served once a month — at best — from its respective establishment. A pair of bites from two pop-ups that have ceased since wrapped up their runs. And a too-brief, two-day return for one of Portland’s all-time signature dishes.

Presented in alphabetical order, these 10 dishes — plus a bonus dessert — represent the most delicious dishes I ate this year.
