Frances Perkins was America’s first woman Cabinet Secretary and the longest-serving Secretary of Labor. This week, a new national park honoring her life and service was established in Newcastle, Maine. 

A lifelong advocate for human and workers’ rights, Perkins became the first female member of a Presidential cabinet when she was appointed as Secretary of Labor by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1933. As Secretary, Perkins was the driving force behind the creation of Social Security and Fair Labor Standards which established pensions, unemployment insurance, survivor benefits, restrictions on child labor, and maximum hours and minimum wages for all interstate industries. She was also instrumental in New Deal programs such as the Civilian Conservation Corps, the Public Works Administration, the National Recovery Administration, and the Works Progress Administration. 

The centerpiece of Frances Perkins National Monument is the Perkins Homestead, also known as the Brick House, in Newcastle, Maine. The site was designated a #NationalHistoricLandmark in 2014. The National Park Service will work closely with the Frances Perkins Center and others dedicated to the preservation of the site to continue and expand visitor services.

The Frances Perkins National Monument will join other national park sites with a primary focus on the accomplishments of women, including Belmont-Paul Women’s Equality National Monument, Clara Barton National Historic Site, Eleanor Roosevelt National Historic Site, Emmett Till and Mamie Till-Mobley National Monument, Harriett Tubman National Historical Park, Maggie L. Walker National Historic Site, Mary McLeod Bethune Council House National Historic Site, Rosie the Riveter WWII Home Front National Historical Park, and Women’s Rights National Historical Park.
