During the AVCA Coaches of the Year award ceremony, presented by the United States Marine Corps, we had the pleasure of speaking with Matt Werle, head coach of Grand Canyon University’s men’s volleyball team, who was honored as the National Collegiate Men’s Coach of the Year.
In his ninth season at GCU, Coach Werle has led the Lopes to a program-record 26 wins in 2024, achieving the school’s first-ever No. 1 national ranking. Under his guidance, the team earned its second consecutive appearance in the NCAA Men’s Volleyball Championship. Notably, Werle is the first individual to receive both the AVCA Men’s Volleyball Coach of the Year award (2024) and the AVCA Men’s Volleyball Player of the Year award (2007).
