## Caption

Effective oyster restoration starts by tackling one of two key challenges: a lack of hard substrate or a lack of free-floating larval oysters. In Charleston, we’re fortunate to have plenty of larval oysters, but over-harvesting, erosion, and poor water quality have left us with little viable substrate for them to attach. There are many innovative restoration techniques, but shell-spraying, as seen here, helps solve that problem by using firehoses to return thousands of treated oyster shells back into the water. These shells provide the perfect foundation for larvae to attach, grow into spat, and eventually rebuild vibrant oyster reefs. Check out this captivating clip of the scdnr S.C.O.R.E.
