BUZZER BEATING WIN: The girls varsity basketball team played a tight game against LASA, one of their biggest competitors, on Friday Dec. 13.

With 10 seconds left in the game, the two rivals were tied at 39. Those 10 seconds will undoubtedly be etched into McCallum girls basketball legend for how they played out.

Inbounding the ball from halfcourt, Sofia Villanueva passed the ball to senior guard Miranda DiGiovanni near the baseline just inside the 3-point arc. DiGiovanni squared up to shoot but facing defenders whipped the ball back to Villanueva, who dribbled to the top of the key before handing the ball off to senior point guard Emy Chen and setting a screen for her. Chen received the ball and used the screen to drive toward the basket. After four dribbles, Chen leaped into the air. A little further under the basket than she anticipated, she twisted her body and adjusted her release point. Instead of using the backboard she aimed for the basket, and her floater found nothing but net as time expired.

Final score: Knights 41, Raptors 39.

“My main goal was to get downhill to get close to the basket for the take, but when I made it I was mostly shocked, it was a tough angle,” Chen said.

Chen, the hero, felt that the team worked together well and were focused the entire game.

“I think we started slow but improved in intensity as the game went on,” Chen said. “We hit our shots and our defense improved when we needed it to. The most glaring thing I think we need to work on though is rebounding. We need to keep other teams off their offensive rebounds.”

The win improved the Knights’ district record to 2-0, but this past Friday, the varsity girls basketball lost to Crockett to fall to 2-1; however, they are already anticipating their next district game on New Year’s Eve next Tuesday at Anderson.

Before that, they will play in the Wemberley tournament Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
