Sea snakes are a group of highly specialized marine reptiles found primarily in the warm coastal waters of the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Unlike their terrestrial relatives, most sea snakes are fully aquatic and possess paddle-shaped tails and laterally compressed bodies, enabling them to glide effortlessly through the water. They have adapted to marine life by developing salt-excreting glands and the ability to absorb oxygen through their skin, allowing them to stay submerged for extended periods. Despite their venomous bite, sea snakes are generally non-aggressive and pose little threat to humans unless provoked.

With over 60 species, sea snakes display remarkable diversity in size, coloration, and behavior. Some species, like the banded sea krait, can move between land and sea, while others, such as the olive sea snake, spend their entire lives in the ocean. They primarily feed on fish and eels, using their potent venom to immobilize prey. Sea snakes play a vital role in maintaining the balance of marine ecosystems, yet they face threats from habitat loss, bycatch in fishing nets, and climate change. Studying these reptiles not only sheds light on their adaptations but also highlights the importance of conserving their ocean habitats.
