PANTHERS 39, KNIGHTS 38: The varsity boys basketball team traveled to Pflugerville High School Saturday morning and lost for the eighth time this season. The game was also their final game before beginning a long stretch of exclusive district play.

The game started with an almost immediate foul on the Knights, giving Pflugerville a quick two-point lead. By the end of the first quarter, however, McCallum had taken a 9-8 lead thanks to layups by junior Ethan Plummer, senior Luke Dunham and a three-pointer from senior George Brode.

The second quarter proved to be better offensively for the Knights, scoring 11 unanswered points to take a 20-8 lead at the half. Coming back from halftime, the Panthers took their turn and outscored the Knights 16-6, although McCallum still kept a two-point lead, 26-24, at the end of the quarter. Pflugerville didn’t let up in the fourth quarter though, and once again outscored the Knights 15-12 to win the game 39-38.

Senior captain Felix Kahlor said that preventing turnovers and fouls are the main areas where the Knights could improve.

“We need to do a better job at sticking with our game plan throughout the whole game and trusting each other more and just being more disciplined when we’re playing offense and defense,” Kahlor said.

Kahlor also noted that playing tougher teams in non-district, although sometimes resulting in a loss, will pay off eventually.

“Playing more competitive teams will help us in the long run when we’re playing tougher teams like Anderson and LASA,” Kahlor said. “I think just doing this will really help us overall.”

As if to prove Kahlor a prophet, the Knights defeated the Anderson Trojans today 54-38. Coverage of that will be posted here soon. Their next game is an away game on Friday against the Cedar Creek Eagles, who the Knights faced as bi-district opponents last year but are now a district opponent due to realignment.
