Too many times a goal of this nature just gets thrown in the category of an RVH fail. That is generic and a lazy synopsis. This particular goal is a questionable read , poor tracking, and haphazard execution.

1. Always start with this premise: An RVH is NOT a save; it is a starting point. You still have to read, track, and execute. Why do we RVH? The premise is to seal the short side post and ice in tight while providing for the ability to move quickly and with leverage in the event of an in tight or cross crease pass. Under that premise, if you are a goaltender who is comfortable and, this is important, effective going into an RVH with the puck further away from the net, you have to accept the fact your mask is now an active piece of equipment in making the save. Also, masks are designed to take impact on the front, so get your nose to the puck!

2. Learn to scan the ice and read threats and defensive coverage. On this opportunity, the defensive coverage is remarkable. While you can never over commit, the goaltender needs to keep his eyes to the puck here and hold the post. While it can be argued to stay in an overlap, a goaltender like Jonathon Quick would be in an RVH here and still execute effectively. The key is the vision and read.

Reads empower your patience. Your eyes guide you and your balance allows you to effectively execute. Techniques and saves are the body of the car. Your vision and athletic ability are the engine that propels the car.
