## Caption

“I got an assignment from Runner's World back in 1983 to photograph this new club that was working out in Central Park. The name of the person I contacted was Dick Traum and that started a friendship that lasted until his passing this year. I miss him very much because he and the Achilles Track Club influenced my life so much.”

Meet Larry Sillen👋, an NYRR member since 1980. When Larry started running in 1978, he didn’t realize he’d eventually become such an active part of the NYC running community. Decades later he’s run well over 200 NYRR races including completing the New York City Marathon 8 times, 5 of which he’s done as a guide with Achilles International. He’s also volunteered at many NYRR races, expos, and Open Runs in Brooklyn.

When he first started signing up for races, he noticed a fellow runner giving out 4x6 photos from the race and was encouraged to do the same. He said it was a great way to make new friends.📸

“As I progressed in my running, I would sign up for more NYRR races and of course take more photos. Taking photos is something I love to do and putting them together made me even happier.”

In the early 2000s Larry was experiencing hip problems and wasn’t able to race. He channeled his passion for the running community into taking more photos, mostly at Achilles International events and especially at the Achilles Hope & Possibility 4M race.

“Because of that I still felt part of NYRR and [was still able to] share my photos with running friends. Sharing is something I want to do for life, not just run for life. They both keep me going.”

He’s inspired to keep running even in his 80s because of the many people he’s met throughout his running journey.

“To see the same people that I met years ago are still out there running the roads and trails of Central Park or even close to home in Prospect Park, making friends with NYRR staff, volunteering at the races year after year, being an Achilles guide, [all have] inspired me.”

Let’s show some 💙 in the comments to our friend Larry and learn more about how you can become a member at the link in bio.✍️
