I’ve been seeing people saying “check on your strong friend”, but I think that we should be saying “check on all your friends and make sure that mental health is topic that is openly talked about and not taboo.”

As someone who has struggled with depression and anxiety, I can tell you from my experience that I’ve never been one to really share when I was going through anything. You could talk to me every day and I would laugh and joke the whole time. Is that helpful? Nope, but in my head, I don’t want to be a burden to anyone, especially if I don’t think that they’ve ever experienced what I’m going through. Keyword: THINK. Maybe my friend has struggled with their mental health but never felt comfortable enough to talk about it because society will try to deem you as “weak” or “crazy”; it’s even worse when you’re black (whew, that’s another story for another day). Do you see how not normalizing mental health convos can be detrimental?

Someone’s healing can be a matter of someone saying that they can understand and relate. To know that you are not alone makes a big difference. So, I encourage everyone to normalize mental health and to make it a priority to check on and really be willing to support your friends (and family members) in the capacity that they need you.
