Shawna Nicols, also known as DJ Shawna and the official DJ of the Milwaukee Bucks, has gained national notoriety following the unique opportunity to DJ in the ‘NBA Bubble’ during the Covid-19 Pandemic. Titled ‘Dare To Be,’ Shawna is releasing a five-part documentary series to her YouTube channel, highlighting the moments and people that helped her reach success at different points throughout her life. “I want to share part of my story to inspire you to be your absolute best self,” said DJ Shawna on this passion project. “There have been so many people that believed in me, saw something in me, and included me in opportunities that changed not only my career but my life. I hope that you see yourself in someone in this project; whether it's myself or someone that opened a door for me." “You too can Dare To Be and make this world a little bit of a better place.” A former division-one and professional basketball player, Shawna has transformed her competitive drive and love of sports into further opportunities to DJ the NCAA Women’s Final Four, Ryder Cup and NBA All-Star Games, in addition to DJing a World Championship for the Milwaukee Bucks. “It is always so amazing to see the tenacity of your children,” said Beth Weirick, CEO of Milwaukee Downtown, better known as Shawna’s mom. “As the filming of the documentary unfolded, it was a walk down memory lane. I was reminded of the joyfulness of my daughters’ presence, her positive spirit and energy, and a celebration of how her perseverance has resulted in the successful pursuit and intersection of two of her passions – basketball and music. Along the way Shawna has always been a safe refuge for others that she protects and inspires. She brings pure joy and encouragement in all she does! I am blessed to call her daughter.” The documentary features prominent figures from sports media, as well as former teammates, friends, community leaders and others who have influenced and impacted Shawna’s personal journey. “Shawna gave all of the NBA players, and those lucky enough in the media to be in the bubble a great musical experience,” said Brian Anderson, play-by-play broadcaster for TNT and Turner Sports. “The energy Shawna brought, and care she put in to each song played, definitely resonated with everyone, especially during such an uncertain time in the world. Shawna is the vibes queen!” ‘Dare To Be,’ created in partnership with the HEARTLENT Group, who serve as the production company on this project, will premiere on November 18, 2022.
