As we enter hurricane season, it's crucial to highlight how coastal cities can protect themselves from future disasters. New York City has weathered its share of storms, with Hurricane Sandy serving as a wake-up call. In 2012, it flooded 17% of the city, claiming 44 lives and causing $19 billion in damages in total. With 520 miles of coastline, the threat of sea level rise and storm surges looms large.

In response, projects like the Lower Manhattan Coastal Resiliency (LMCR) and East Side Coastal Resiliency (ESCR) are transforming how the city protects itself. From innovative flood barriers to elevated parks and green infrastructure, these initiatives aim to safeguard neighborhoods and keep vital urban hubs thriving.
