BOYS HOOPS DEFEND TACO SHACK TITLE: The varsity boys basketball team defeated the Anderson Trojans 54-38 in the second annual Taco Shack Shields Collide rivalry game on New Year’s Eve to close out 2024. The Knights are now 2-0 in Shields Collide history after beating Anderson 51-37 in the inaugural game on Nov. 11, 2023, which was their first win against Anderson since Nov. 13, 2007.

The Trojans took control of the opening tip, quickly scoring five points to take an early lead, but the Knights’ offense quickly revved up, allowing them to take the lead at the end of the first quarter 8-7. In the second quarter, it took McCallum over three minutes to make a basket, but the Knights used the rest of the quarter to their full advantage, outscoring Anderson 14-10 to take a 22-17 at half. Senior George McCoy made the greatest impact in the second quarter, scoring 10 of the Knights’ 14 points. McCoy was the games’ top scorer, totaling 22 points by game’s end. Senior George Brode and junior Ethan Plummer contributed eight points each.

Brode said that the key to winning this game was the team sticking to the plan they had going into the rivalry matchup.

“Our goal defensively was to keep [Anderson] to as many single-digit quarters as we could get,” Brode said. “Like Coach [Fuentes] says, it always starts with defense because we can always rely on our offense to carry us throughout games, but defense is something that needs to be consistent.”

In the second half, McCallum held Anderson to 21 points, while scoring 32 to seal the win. Brode said that on top of defensive efficiency, the Knights also stayed focused, which allowed them to keep up their energy and avoid a late Anderson comeback.

“We kind of have a problem of just wanting to play it out,” Brode said, “but if we stay disciplined, stay consistent with our plays, we’ll get open looks.”

Brode said that the stakes of a big rivalry game also allowed their energy to stay high.
