When the opportunity to move into downtown Portland’s historic Morgan building arose, Nodoguro owners Ryan and Elena Roadhouse were as nervous as you might expect.

“The owners reached out to us and said, ‘We have this beautiful space, would you come take a look?’ That was a little over a year ago, and we were full of objections,” Ryan Roadhouse said. ‘Oh yeah, that’s a great space, but we’re got a lot going on already. And it’s downtown Portland.’”

But instead of the post-apocalyptic wasteland the social media comments below this story might lead you to expect, they found a relatively safe neighborhood that seemed to get better — or at least more intriguing — each time they visited.
