POLAR BEARS, POLAR TEMPS: The boys varsity soccer team braved the cold weather Friday night to pull out a 2-1 road win against the Austin Achieve Polar Bears. Sophomore soccer player Brandon Reynaga is especially proud of the way the Knights played in the first half of the game.

“In the first half, we did a really good job of addressing the ball,” Reynaga said. “In the second half, we kind of dropped off a bit, but we got the win at the end, and we pushed through like every game we’ve won.”

McCallum got on the board early, scoring at 14:55 in the first half. Although McCallum kept it 1-0 for most of the game until the middle of the second half, when the Polar Bears scored off of a penalty kick to tie the game. The game remained tied until the last few minutes, when Reynaga scored the winning goal with only seven and a half minutes left in the game.

“We got the win in the last few minutes,” Reynaga said. “I scored the winner. It felt good.”

While the game-winning goal may have come in the last few minutes, it was McCallum’s ability to hold possession that helped them prevail, Reynaga said. 

“I think we kept the ball really well,” Reynaga said. “And on the defensive transition, we did really good on getting back.”

The Knights’ win against the Polar Bear keeps the boys varsity undefeated at 3-0 in pre-district play. The team has a few more non-district matches before the start of district games, which Reynaga anticipates eagerly.

“I’m just looking forward to trying to win district, and going far in the playoffs hopefully,” Reynaga said.

The boys varsity soccer team plays 6A Austin High Monday night at Nelson at 7:30 p.m. The varsity game will be preceded by the JV-B game at 4:15 p.m. and the. JV-A game at 6 p.m.
