The varsity girls basketball team lost 57-35 to rival Anderson in a road district match on New Year’s Eve. After back-to-back district titles the past two years, McCallum has found that the UIL district realignment since last season to be a challenge according to sophomore Ruby Airhart.

“It was our second [district] loss so, [the realignment has presented] a little problem in our run for district because we want to be district champs again like the past two years, so now it’s going to be a bit difficult to achieve that,” Airhart said.

Before the game began, the team was anxious to play, but they remained positive.

“We were feeling a little bit like underdogs there because we were at their home and we realized they had a lot of good players, but we were feeling hopeful,” Airhart said.

Despite pre-season practice, Airhart said the varsity Knights did not play as well against Anderson as they had hoped to.

“Defense was OK,” Airhart said. “We’ve been improving on that for this season.” Airhart said, “but it didn’t go as we planned, we just didn’t really execute like we wanted to and our offense wasn’t doing what we wanted it to.”

The varsity knights are still going after that district championship title, however, and are making sure to bring their best to the following games this season. Despite having key players miss time due to injury since the Anderson loss, the Knights have won back-to-back district home games against Cedar Creek and Ann Richards to improve their district record to 4-2.

“We’re gonna try to do everything we can to win every other game.” Airhart said.

The girls basketball program hits the road again today for a test against another new district foe: Bastrop. The varsity Bears (5-1) currently sit in second place behind undefeated Anderson (6-0). The varsity game is scheduled for an 8 p.m. tipoff, preceded by the JV-B at 5:15 p.m. and the JV-A at 6:30 p.m.
