Everyone who got to witness the wizardry of Gus Williams back in the day has a story.

“I’ve never seen such quickness in my life as Gus Williams in the open court,” Boston Celtics Pro Basketball Hall of Famer Kevin McHale remarked back in 1981.

He was a generational talent who never tired of telling people where he was from.

Williams, a former NBA champion with the Seattle Sonics, died Wednesday, Jan. 15, in Columbia, Maryland nearly five years after suffering a stroke. He was 71 years old. Williams grew up on South 5th Avenue in Mount Vernon, part of a family with serious basketball DNA.
