Depending on the age of the audience, he was Chick or Zuc.

Nobody used his given name.

Frank Mazzuca was an outgoing and relatable character to the end. The lifelong educator and administrator was a respected basketball official and dedicated Special Olympics volunteer who treated everyone with the same level of enthusiasm and respect.

And those who became part of his inner circle knew him to be a world-class needler.

“Chick had a way of insulting people without them feeling insulted,” said Billy Sacco, who was a friend of Mazzuca's for 50 years. “He was disarming. Chick made people laugh without intentionally offending anyone. The humor always came from a good place.”

Mazzuca died at home in Briarcliff on Wednesday, Jan. 15, due to complications from Alzheimer’s. He was 78.
