The B5 Audi RS4 Avant, produced from 1999 to 2001, is a legendary model that was never officially sold in the United States, making it a rare gem among American enthusiasts. Designed primarily for the European market, where performance wagons enjoyed significant popularity, the RS4 Avant did not align with the preferences of the U.S. market at the time, which leaned heavily toward sedans, SUVs, and coupes.

Adapting the RS4 Avant for U.S. regulations presented another hurdle. Meeting federal safety and emissions standards would have required costly modifications, an impractical endeavor for a niche model produced in limited numbers. With only 6,030 units hand-assembled by Audi’s Quattro GmbH, the RS4 Avant was a low-volume specialty vehicle, and prioritizing its compliance for the U.S. market was not feasible.
