MAGICAL 200s: Sophomore Viggo Gonzales shows thumbs up after 200 free race at the Coastal Bend TISCA Zone 2025 meet on Jan. 11 in Corpus Christi. The swim team stayed overnight on Jan. 10 to compete in the championship meet. The girls team received second place overall, and the boys placed third out of 15 high schools at the meet.

In individual events, two swimmers won second place, two placed third, four placed fourth, four placed fifth, and many placed sixth through eighth, or swam in consolation finals. For relays, one placed second, one third, two fifth, one sixth and one seventh.

According to Gonzales, who placed second in finals in the boys 200 free race, the meet went well both individually and as a team. Gonzales enjoyed being able to make new friends at the meet as well.

“I dropped time on all my events and the atmosphere was very nice during the meet as everyone was in a pretty good mood,” Gonzales said. “[It] went by pretty fast but all in all the meet was a blast.”

Gonzales liked being able to stay at a hotel overnight because of the ability to hangout, swim at the hotel and talk to other team mates. One of Gonzales’ favorite parts was dropping time to swim a 200 free in under two minutes.

“It felt magical like ‘I just did that,’” Gonzales said. “I’m so proud of myself.”

Gonzales believes that McCallum swimmers were comfortable and confident at the meet despite it being in a different city. Although there were a few minor mishaps, the meet went well overall.

Gonzales is looking forward to the rest of the season’s meets, such as Districts.

“[I want] to drop more time,” Gonzales said. “And to hangout with my friends.”

We will have more coverage of the swim team’s trip to Corpus Christi in a second post to this feed soon.
