Lisa Whitfield ’90, owner of For Ewe: An Inclusive Fiber Community, has always been drawn to fiber arts. Her grandmother taught her how to crochet at age 5. Later in life, the “magic” of knitting drew her in after an encounter on a bus with someone who was knitting.

During her time at Oberlin, Lisa noticed what she felt was a gap in the college and community. She wanted a space where she felt a true sense of belonging. She remembered her grandmother’s home, and how her grandmother welcomed everyone with open arms. “My grandmother's house was a hub where people came—sometimes for her cooking, sometimes because they were in trouble and knew she would help,” shares Whitfield. It was a place where people could come as they were, be treated with dignity, and find community. This was Lisa's inspiration behind creating For Ewe.

For Ewe is not only a retail space for fiber arts supplies, but a haven for all creatives seeking community. Lisa has a commitment to welcoming people of all backgrounds, and a goal to lift up those in the fiber arts who have been marginalized — such as women, people of color, those who identify as LGBTQ+, and neurodiverse individuals.

This ethos combined with Lisa’s successful entrepreneurship journey has created an invaluable resource for both the college and community. And, in the spirit of paying it forward, Lisa decided to sublet the upstairs space of For Ewe to another small business, Potted Joy — a plant store that had its grand opening on October 11th. Lisa saw in its owner, Maegen, a reflection of her own passion and wanted to provide her with the same opportunity she had been given.

Go visit For Ewe and Potted Joy at 29 W. College St. Community Craft Nights happen every Wednesday from 5-7pm, though as Lisa says, "the table is available whenever the shop is open." 🧶🪴
