Suffs, a Broadway musical written by and starring Shaina Taub, covers the early 20th-century suffragette movement. The musical has garnered significant attention, culminating in two Tony awards. The inspiration? An Obie!

Taub cites Jailed for Freedom by Doris Stevens, class of 1911, as the driving force behind the creation of the play. The memoir details Stevens' political action during the 1910s—after graduating from Oberlin, Stevens worked for a conservative suffrage organization in Ohio, then for the Congressional Union for Woman Suffrage (CUWS). Later, this evolved into the National Woman’s Party, where Stevens served as vice president. Her political achievements were widely recognized as robust and impactful; any articles on Stevens from the 20th century acknowledge her as a “women’s rights champion” or a “noted feminist leader."

When Taub received Stevens’ book, she stayed up all night reading it, saying that it “read like a thriller.” Taub's fascination with Stevens and her story resulted in the award-winning musical, where Stevens is featured as a prominent character. Here, Stevens, played by Nadia Dandashi, sits on the left among fellow suffragettes.
