On Music’s Biggest Night, Obies had a big night! Congrats to all of the winners at this year’s Grammy Awards, including horn professor and composer Jeff Scott, who won Best Classical Compendium for his composition “Passion For Bach And Coltrane”! ✨🎼✨ Repost from @oberlincon: 

Congratulations to the Oberlin alumni who took home 2024 Grammy Awards!

The award for Best Opera Recording—the @metopera’s recording of @terence_blanchard’s “Champion”—went to the conductor, producer, lead soloists, orchestra, and chorus and included two Oberlin alumni: Laura McGinnis ’83, a violinist in the @metorchestra, and Rosalie Sullivan ’99, an alto in the @METOperaChorus.

The Best Orchestral Performance went to the @laphil’s recording of Thomas Adès’ “Dante.” Numerous Oberlin alumni of that orchestra include Principal Clarinet Boris Allakhverdyan ’06, Associate Principal Viola Ben Ullery ’04, Oboist and Solo English Horn player Carolyn Hove ’80, Associate Principal Oboe Marion Arthur Kuszyk ’88, and Bass Trombone John Lofton ’77. 

The Best Chamber Music/Small Ensemble Performance went to @roomfulofteeth for “Rough Magic.” Bass-baritone Dashon Burton ‘05 is a member of the ensemble. This is his third Grammy win.

Best Classical Instrumental Solo went to “The American Project” a collaboration with pianist Yuja Wang and the @louisvilleorchestra, whose members include violist Jennifer Shackleton ‘94 and principal bassoonist Matthew Karr ‘78.

Best Classical Compendium recording was awarded to “Passion For Bach And Coltrane,” written by Oberlin horn professor @jeffscott_composer with performances by @imaniwinds(whose Oberlin alumni members are flutist Brandon Patrick George ‘08, oboist Toyin Spellman-Diaz ‘94, and bassoonist Monica Ellis ‘95) and also by jazz percussionist Neal Smith ‘96.

For the Best Contemporary Classical Composition, the award went to the composer Jessie Montgomery for her work, “Rounds.” And while the performing artists on the recording are not the Grammy winners, Oberlin alumnus Dashon Burton ’05 sang with Roomful of Teeth on this recording.
