SLAM DUNK: Ray Barrett scored 11 points and teammate Ryland Jones scored 10 as the JV Knights relied on a supremely balanced scoring effort to pummel the Navarro Vikings 71-12 on Jan. 14 at home.

Though the score did not provide much drama, there were some dramatic moments for the Knights that got the crowd buzzing and on their feet. 

In the second quarter, team manager Niko Vega entered the game and made an immediate impact, scoring five points to the delight of the home fans and Vega’s teammates on the Knight bench.

One of those teammates—Amsden Withers—said he was ecstatic when Vega went into the game.

“I couldn’t believe Niko went in,” Withers said. “I was so excited for him.”

Withers delivered a highlight of his own during the game: his first career dunk during a live game.

“I was really excited about my dunk,” he said. “I’ve been waiting to have a successful one in a game.” 

Withers thinks the team has had a successful season so far, but work could still be put in.

“We can definitely work on slowing down and running our plays,” Withers said. “But I think we’ve done really well with our defense, as well as our energy and effort,” Withers said.

Avi Rapaport scored seven points for the victorious Knights, and Cole Truong contributed six.

The second half of the district season continues for the Knights on Tuesday when they face Cedar Creek at home.
