#SUMMERSPOTLIGHT 💎☀️

Next up in our summer spotlight series is rising junior Avery Fortier (AC ‘21) who spent her summer conducting psoriatic arthritis research through VUSRP. 

In this lab, Avery worked to create an algorithm to identify positive cases in Vanderbilt specific electronic health records (check her out at the Undergraduate Research Fair September 8th at 4:30 pm!). She was also able to shadow multiple doctors and surgeons at VUMC, including her PI! She then returned home to Boston to finish her summer as the director of the Lexington Debate Institute where she teaches middle schoolers fundamental debate techniques!

About her summer, Avery said:

“I have loved this summer because I have gotten to see so many of the people I love most. I lived in a house in Nashville with 7 of my best friends, including 3 other ADPis, one of whom I even brought with me on my family trip to North Carolina :) I also took a trip to Amsterdam with family and to Chicago with some of my best friends from ADPi. I even continued working with an organization I was introduced to at day of service, Pawster, and was able to foster two super sweet dogs, Heaven and Midnight, for almost two weeks. In my time at home in Boston, I’ve had a super fun foot surgery made actually fun by our VPMD (my bestie) visiting me and bringing me get-well-soon Reese’s. My summer has been a whirlwind of research, travel, and very little sleep, but my best friends and my love for this sorority have been with me through it all!” 🥰
