“I run because it gives me joy. I love the challenge of the races and the feeling of accomplishment at the end. I love the friends I have made and the exciting experiences I have had through the years.”

When NYRR member Nancy Wagner-Wetzel was growing up in Queens, Title IX didn’t exist yet. She said during gym class the girls did “modified-rule” sports and there were no opportunities for her to do more. Decades later, at 73 years old, Nancy has run 92 NYRR races and has been a member since 2005.🤯

“My dear friend Amy, who continues to be my running buddy, had been giving examples of older women who ran marathons, and she convinced me to sign up for my first NYC Marathon in 2009 at the age of 58.”

Nancy is a member of the Richmond Rockets, a Staten Island–based run club established in the 1990s to promote running in the local community. She credits the club for encouraging her to sign up for NYRR races, the first being the Staten Island Half in 2005. She then went on to run the NYC Half in 2006 and was hooked.

“I was excited with the larger races and happy to run in Central Park. I am a native New Yorker but had never run in Manhattan before the NYC Half.”🗽

She regularly volunteers for the TCS New York City Marathon at the start on Staten Island and she says she appreciates the ways NYRR tries to accommodate all who want to run the races.🤝

“NYRR has grown significantly since I have joined and the obvious effort it takes to organize races for thousands of people is unfathomable.”

Let's show some 💙 in the comments to our friend Nancy and learn more about how you can become a member at the link in bio.✍️
