## Caption

These two terms are often misunderstood so let’s be clear - Chin-ups are done with an underhand (supinated) grip and pull-ups are done with an overhand (pronated) grip. The confusion likely comes from the fact that both do in fact require you to *pull* your *chin* *up* above the bar 😵... confusing, right?

At Athletic Lab we generally refer only to “pull-ups” and then specify underhand or overhand grip. Especially for members new to fitness, we want to see you successfully pull yourself up so we don’t really have a preference how you do that as long as you’re being safe. Achieving your first pull-up/chin-up is an amazing feeling and a huge confidence booster.

​Once you’re able to perform several unassisted reps with solid form, then it may be more appropriate to utilize the differences between the two variations to target more specific adaptations.
