## Caption

This summer, Luke De Carlo-McCann ’26 conducted research in the intertidal regions of Sitka, Alaska. The geosciences and anthropology double major studied shellfish—specifically the calcification process of the California mussel shell. He worked with the non-profit Sitka Sound Science Center and formed relationships with its faculty, as well as research partners at the University of Alaska Southeast, UC Davis, and the wider community of Sitka. Luke was able to further the independent research he began at Oberlin, make new connections, and experience what it was like to complete fieldwork in an entirely different climate. 🐚
