Hello and bonjour! My name is Eloise Rich, and I’m a third-year Comparative Literature and French double major. This winter term, I am fortunate to have joined a group of about 25 other Oberlin students to complete an immersion program in Bordeaux. 

Each morning, we complete four hours of French study with Alliance française, an international school for language learning. Each night, we return to our respective host families. Some afternoons are free for us Bordobies, as we’re colloquially known, to explore the city, while others involve group activities carefully curated by Alliance and Julian Roland, Oberlin Lecturer in French and Bordeaux native. Each activity and city tour has built upon each other, painting a complete picture of Bordelais history. Of course, some of my favorite days have been those with wine and cheese tastings, and learning regional explanations for flavor variances.

As a student of translation, the experience of immersion is invaluable. At this point in my studies, it can be challenging to find courses taught in French that align with my interests, so to have the opportunity in class and at home with my host mom to discuss cultural subjects, like literature, cinema, and current events. Just last week at Alliance, we finished a deep dive into journalism and media on the French and global stage. Because Alliance is an international school, there are students from all walks of life and an array of countries, from Spain to Ukraine. For me, the exposure to different cultures and having to communicate in a language that’s not my first has been remarkable, rewarding, and the reason I continue language learning.
