“The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives” (Psalm 37:23). Every time I read this verse, it makes me giggle—God is always on the move! My life has been a series of moves made by God that I never asked for but that ended up being blessings …

When I got divorced, I thought my life was over. I had no idea what was going to start, but it was my new life—a life of purpose for God.

I was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic church, but I needed more. My girlfriends and I would get together, and one night, the U2 song “Stuck in a Moment” was playing. I remember being moved by the part where Bono says, “You’ve got to get yourself together. You’ve got stuck in a moment, and now you can’t get out of it. Don’t say that later will be better.”

I told myself I needed to get better. So, with the help of my daughters, I searched for a new church. We found one in 2003, and we have beautiful memories of serving and worshiping there. But after 14 years, I got burned out and decided to move to the city where my mom lived. I found a nice church and was planning to put down roots, but God guided me to Nashville to spend time with my older daughter.

After that, I was planning on heading back to my home country of Honduras, but before I left, a friend asked me to visit Des Moines. When I arrived, she invited a coworker named Celso for coffee with us. That became the first of millions of coffees with Celso, who eventually became my husband.

We visited Celso’s church, but it wasn’t my place. I didn’t want to guide him to leave his church, so I prayed to God to take us to HIS house. We visited three churches, and no one greeted us. So Celso said, “Why don’t we go to Hope?” The first day we came to weekend worship, everyone greeted us with so much love. And one day, the worship band even sang a U2 song!

The leaders at Hope will say we are an imperfect church, but I can shout to everyone that Hope is perfect for ME! The Lord guided my steps to come here, and I am so happy to be part of the amazing Hope family now as the Adult Ministry coordinator. And on top of all that, Iowa is the state of corn—my favorite!
