“When friends began talking about wanting to do the NYC Marathon and doing the 9+1 together, it was a no-brainer. The race days with NYRR were days I looked forward to.”🥹
 
Meet Nikki Santiago👋, who is not only an NYRR member but also works with NYRR's International Tour Operators (ITO) program. Her 9+1 journey started when she ran the 2023 #UnitedNYCHalf to raise money for her former employer, the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (themmrf), a nonprofit organization focused on accelerating a cure for multiple myeloma.
 
“Running for the MMRF was truly an incredible experience because I became part of a team that were each linked to the organization and to multiple myeloma in some way. Each person was running with a purpose.”
 
Before running the United Airlines NYC Half, she said she ran leisurely as a way to move her body. It wasn’t until she started training for the half marathon that she shifted gears and became more intentional with her training.💪
 
“When the day came and I ran through the streets of NYC, crowds cheering in Times Square, and my family and friends shouting my name from the sidelines, there was no going back, I was in it!”
 
She ran the 2024 #TCSNYCMarathon with the friends who encouraged one another to do their 9+1 journeys together.
 
“The fact is, these races are located across different boroughs, and with the NYC Marathon winding its way around, it was like remembering where you ran and how you got to where you are now. If there’s anything I could say about the 9+1 journey, do it with your friends, family, significant others. Make it a shared goal leading up to the culmination of each and every one of you doing something that you never thought you could do.”
