## Caption

Did you know that Haitians fought in the American Revolution? On October 9, 1779, the Chasseurs Volontaires de Saint-Domingue—a regiment of over 500 free men of color—played a key role in the Battle of Savannah, one of the war’s most pivotal fights. Among them was Henri Christophe, who would later become a leader in the Haitian Revolution and the first king of an independent Haiti. 

We’re honored to spotlight this history through two recent acquisitions by artist Kervin Andre akomicsart The Battle of Savannah” (2015) and “King Henry Christophe” (2021)—now on view in ‘Seeing America: 18th & 19th Century’ on the 1st floor. 
 
Andre has previously exhibited at the Newark Arts Festival exhibition hosted at NMOA, and now his work enters our permanent collection—continuing our commitment to uplifting emerging artists. 

Visit this Black History Month to explore the rich, global impact of Black resistance, leadership, and resilience.
