EPIC COMEBACK AT MANOR: After being down 7-1 in the second inning, the varsity softball team came back to beat the Manor Mustangs 9-8. According to junior Zara Cacci, the softball players’ key to rallying lay in believing in their abilities.

“I think we just had to realize that we are going to play better teams and that we can come back,” Cacci said. “I’m really proud of all the effort that everyone put in.”

Another part of the Knights’ comeback was adjusting their hitting to match the speed of Manor’s pitcher. 

“People really started to realize how to time up the pitcher really well because she was slower,” Cacci said. “We really got the hang of what she was throwing.”

The softball team began to cut into Manor’s lead over the next few innings with a series of singles and doubles; however, they didn’t take the lead until the top of the sixth inning, when sophomore Nichelle Floyd hit a two-run homer with one out, a full count and a runner on third base. 

“The first thing that went through my mind was just to hit the ball,” Floyd said. “It happened to be a home run that led to us winning the game by one run.”

The home run gave the Knights a one-run advantage over the Mustangs, which they held onto for the rest of the game. Besides scoring the game-winning run, Floyd’s home run was a milestone in recent McCallum softball history: it was the first time in three years that a varsity player had hit a home run.

Winning the game was also special for McCallum softball players because last year McCallum had lost to Manor by a very small margin in a similarly close game.

“It was a really high-paced, intense game with lots of cheering from both sides of the dugout ,and overall it just felt really good to come out on top,” Floyd said.

The softball team’s next game is at Marble Falls on Wednesday. JV will play at 5:30 p.m. in its first scrimmage of the season, and varsity will play at 7 p.m.
