It’s hard not to be awed by an active volcano, aka mountain fountain. Molten rock—magma—making its way to the surface gives us a glimpse of the powerful forces that made Earth and continue to shape it today. The National Park Service has over 90 parks with volcanic resources that contribute to their geodiversity and help to tell their geologic story, and 19 parks were set aside primarily for their volcanic resources. For example, Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park contains Kilauea, the most active volcano in the United States. Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument preserves Sunset Crater, the youngest volcano in the San Francisco volcanic field. Crater Lake National Park in Oregon contains a caldera that contains the deepest lake in the United States.
