I’ll share right from the start; LIBRARY GIRL is not your “typical” middle-grade story. It’s not filled with non-stop adventures or friendship dramas, there are no #middleschool bullies to defeat or crushes to work through. LIBRARY GIRL is not that type of read. However, you will soon realize that through author Polly Horvath’s charmingly detailed & timeless writing style, that there is much to enjoy about this story, including an intriguing mystery or two to uncover, surprising twists and turns, and lots of interesting facts to uncover, as we learn how Essie came to spend her first eleven years growing up in the library. And don’t get me wrong, there may not be #MGLit bullies to defeat, but Essie does come up against a terrifying librarian who has the power to ruin the only life she’s known, and there’s also “G.E.” a boy who finds a way to annoy Essie without end, and a boy who might have a few mysteries of his own. There’s also the fact that Essie is being raised by not one, but four moms, and if that’s not strange enough, her four moms are also librarians. Every person Essie meets becomes part of her story & helps her discover who she is & what type of person she will become. You will find many compelling reasons to stay glued to this charming book. Polly Horvath paints detailed pictures of Ellie’s story in her writing. At times, readers will feel like you’re being transported back in time & other times you’ll feel like Essie’s story could be happening today, all based on how the characters express themselves and the topics at hand.

LIBRARY GIRL is a beautifully written tapestry, filled with hundreds of details, observations, and insights that create an enjoyable & unique storytelling experience. Essie’s story is a sweet coming of age tale that helps young readers understand that things don’t always turn out as we hope, but that doesn’t mean the endings are wrong. LIBRARY GIRL is a sweet & fascinating book that embraces the heart & adds just enough mystery and growth for even the most sensitive readers to enjoy. Nicely done!
