I was training for a marathon when I came out of remission with my chronic illness. It has been one of the biggest mental battles of my life to go from feeling strong and confident to feeling out of place in my own body. I had to unfollow fitness influencers because it took me to a very dark place to watch them talk about targeting tummy fat or lifting your booty when I would very much just like to move my body at all without suffering in pain for it.

I learned a long time ago that the healthiest relationship you can have with your body is to focus on what it can do instead of what it looks like. But that’s easier said than done when you watch your body start to change and have to face all the negative feelings that come with it. I grew up in the 90’s and I’m traumatized from all the magazine covers mocking celebrity bodies… just like every other female millennial is. It’s hard sometimes to overcome the narrative that our worth is tied to our appearance and that body shapes are a trend worth punishing yourself to adhere to.

I don’t miss following those toxic fitness accounts and when I see a magazine at the grocery store talking about a celebrity body, I flip it over in hopes maybe one little girl won’t have to see it.

I’m here on your feed to remind you that moving your body, pushing yourself to get stronger or run farther is not a punishment. It is, in fact, one of the greatest gifts we get in this life. 💪🏼
